Double Eagle Fitness shows how to be safe in 2012 by Shelley Klaner
A perfect resolution for the new year is to take care of yourself — not just by losing weight or giving up sugar or smoking — but learning how to protect yourself through basic self-defense.
Sometimes when living in a small town, it is easy to think there is nothing to fear. Just flip on the local TV or scan the police column in the newspaper to discover bad things can happen, especially if you are not prepared.
Double Eagle Fitness is assisting its clients and local residents by presenting a three-hour self-defense and personal safety class. Spaces are still available for the next course on Saturday, Jan. 28 or Feb 11 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Marin Power Squadron at 789 Hamilton Parkway at Hamilton Field in Novato. Class are held the first and last Saturday of the month.
The owners, who met while deployed in Iraq, lead the class. Beqir Gjoka was Albanian Special Forces and Samantha Lief was an intelligence officer for the U.S. Department of Defense. The duo’s extensive backgrounds, combined with training in security, martial arts and more will make this class and unforgettable start to 2012. Learn how to assess a potentially violent situation and be able to respond without freezing in fear. Discover assertive verbal and non-verbal communication skills to avoid or diffuse violent situations and practice striking, charging, and fleeing.
The course will show what to do if threatened by a weapon and how to escape and prevent someone from pinning you down, as well as other techniques using your body’s natural weapons against the targets of a potential enemy, explains Samantha Lief. The class is limited to 14 members per session. Cost ranges from $55 to $75.
“The Self-Defense & Personal Safety class was so great! There was so much diversity in the class- people from 14 to 83 years old, and having black belts to having no previous training- yet we all got something out of it. I know I’m going to use the techniques for staying out of dangerous situations for the rest of my life, and although I hope I never have to use the hands-on techniques, I’m so glad to know them! The instructors are very patient, experienced, and dedicated. THANK YOU Samantha and Beqir! :)” Kara Scherer
