This week-end, a friendly neighbor invited us on a hike in Ignacio Valley. Always up for something new, we packed water bottles and set off into the Indian Valley Open Space Preserve. Five minutes into the hike, sweat is oozing from my brow thanks to extremely steep sections of a slippery fire road. My heart rate intensifies as I marvel at the variety of madrone, manzanita, and oak woodlands. When we reached the top, we could see all the way to Contra Costa and Solano counties. The total distance was only 2.6 miles and even though my glutes and quads were burning, it didn’t feel like a workout.

Check out the fantastic benefits of hiking:

  • A weight-bearing sport which helps prevent osteoporosis
  • Large doses of the prohormone also known as vitamin D
  • Increases cardiovascular capacity (Vo2 max)
  • Relieve back pain
  • Improve arthritis
  • Prevent heart disease
  • Fat loss
  • Escape from the hustle and bustle of cities–time to observe wildlife and nature, and breathe fresh air.

So take a break from running, swimming, biking, and the gym. Get some sturdy boots and head outdoors for an amazing workout!
